Plum Grove Historic Home was the residence of Robert and Friendly Lucas and their family. Robert was appointed by President Van Buren as the first governor of the Territory of Iowa in 1838 and served as governor until 1841. Free tours of the house offer a glimpse into the lives of the Lucas family and life in the 19th century Iowa Territory. Visitors to the site can also tour the historic vegetable and flower gardens which are both part of the Smithsonian’s Archives of American Gardens.

Open Memorial Day Weekend to Labor Day Weekend: Wednesday-Sunday: 1:00pm – 5:00pm.

After Labor Day Weekend to October 31st: Saturday-Sunday: 1:00pm – 5:00pm.

This event is the perfect opportunity for families to get out of the house over the long Memorial Day weekend. Kids can burn off some energy making crafts and running around the beautiful yards of Plum Grove; adults can savor the relaxing atmosphere and participate in activities that are designed with them in mind (visit this page periodically to stay updated about the activities and special guests that will be featured at this event).

The public is invited to sample tomatoes at the annual Tomato Taste at Plum Grove, hosted by the Master Gardeners of Johnson County.
