The Johnson County Historical Society Museum is home to the Society’s more than 10,000 historic artifacts. The exhibits portray the diverse and vibrant heritage of the county, from the Meskwaki tribe and early settlers to contemporary times. The Community Room is available for event rentals.

New Meskwaki Exhibit under construction

We have a new permanent Meskwaki exhibit! We will be hosting an exhibition opening for our new permanent exhibit, Between Two Rivers: Meskwaki in Johnson County. This exhibit showcases Meskwaki history in Johnson County. In addition, the event will also feature a presentation on Meskwaki beadwork by Mary Youngbear. The reception, presentation, and exhibit are free and open to the public.

  Johnson County Historical Society invites you to attend the unveiling of a new photography exhibition titled "Street View: Downtown Iowa City, Then and Now". This exhibition highlights images of the downtown area’s buildings and businesses from 1960 and 2016. In honor of Black History Month, Johnson County Historical Society is hosting a program on Harriet Tubman, as portrayed by Coralville resident, Portia Byrd. Harriet Tubman was an African-American abolitionist, humanitarian, and Union spy during the American Civil War. Born into slavery, Tubman escaped and subsequently made about thirteen missions to rescue approximately seventy enslaved family and friends, using the network of antislavery activists and safe houses known as the Underground Railroad.   Historian Michael Zahs will offer a historic perspective on Frank and Indiana Brinton who were traveling entertainers from Washington, Iowa. Between 1879 and 1915, the Brintons entertained audiences throughout the Midwest, including Iowa City. This program will also include examples from the Brintons' collection of magic lantern slides from 1860-1900 and films from 1895-1908.
