Johnson County Master Gardeners will host its fifth annual Tomato Taste. The public is invited to attend and taste red, orange, green, yellow, striped and even blue tomatoes. Held outdoors under the historic Plum Grove oak trees, participants will learn the latest information on tomato nutrition, saving seed, and growing tomatoes.
Plum Grove Historic Home will be open to tour during this event.

Come celebrate Lucas Farms Neighborhood History featuring these tentative events : Historical activities at Plum Grove Historic Site, home of Iowa’s first territorial governor, Pony Rides and kids activities at Iowa City Assembly Church/ Highland Ave. Park, Project Green’s annual garden tour, featuring Lucas Farms gardens, “Tour De Farms” bike ride, and arts activities along Yewell Street, named after Iowa City’s most historic artist, George Yewell.
Iowa History 101 Mobile Museum will visit Plum Grove Historic Home!
Iowans share a fascination with being Iowan. But what does it really mean to be Iowan? Individuals will have a chance to explore the history of Iowans at home, work and play when visiting The Iowa History 101 mobile museum provided by the State Historical Society of Iowa. This mobile exhibit, which unpacks the stories of Iowa’s past with dozens of artifacts from the State Historical Museum of Iowa’s collection, will stop at Plum Grove Historic Home on June 21st to the 25th from 1:00 to 5:00 pm. The Plum Grove Historic Home was built by Iowa’s first Territorial Governor, Robert Lucas and his wife, Friendly. The 1844 home is located at 1030 Carroll Street in Iowa City, Iowa and will be open for visitors to tour and explore life on the Iowa frontier.
Join us in celebrating this year’s season opening of Plum Grove Historic Home! Visitors will explore the home of Iowa’s first Territorial Governor, view Plum Grove’s vegetable and flower gardens, and enjoy treats provided by the Historic Foodies of Iowa City.
“PLAY BALL!” the early Iowa way: Participants at this year’s Plum Grove Season Opening will also have an opportunity to partake in a 19th-century style game of American cricket. Historian Tom Melville will conduct short, informal cricket games from 1:00 to 4:30. The games will be run on a continuous walkup basis during that time and are open to all. No experience required! Come and discover what “play ball” meant to the people of Iowa!
