Beyond the Grave: 2017 Cemetery Walk

Take a guided walk among the tombstones and meet some of Johnson County’s former residents during Johnson County Historical Society’s Beyond the Grave: 2017 Cemetery Walk on Sunday October 15, 2017 from 5:30 to 8:00 pm, pm at Old St. Joseph Cemetery located in Iowa City, Iowa. Emerging from the night in period costume, actors will tell the tales of individuals buried at Old St. Joseph Cemetery. Visitors will learn about important Iowa City citizens and enjoy refreshments at Happy Hollow Park.

Tours of Old St. Joseph Cemetery will depart every 30 minutes from Happy Hollow Park, 800 Brown St, Iowa City, IA. Parking is available at this location.

Exhibition Opening: Street View: Downtown Iowa City, Then and Now

 

Johnson County Historical Society invites you to attend the unveiling of a new photography exhibition titled “Street View: Downtown Iowa City, Then and Now”. This exhibition highlights images of the downtown area’s buildings and businesses from 1960 and 2016. The 1960s photographs were taken by an Iowa City firefighter and donated to JCHS by Rex Brandstatter. The scenes have been recreated over the past several months by local photographer, Rubin Flores. JCHS will display these street scenes along with period artifacts. The side-by- side views will encourage visitors to compare the buildings and businesses of downtown Iowa City “then and “now.”

The exhibition opening will begin at 3 pm, following the Irving Weber Award Ceremony. Introductory remarks by local historian Rex Brandstatter.

Irving Weber Award Ceremony

” The Irving Weber Award is conferred by the Johnson County Historical Society in recognition of distinguished contribution to the research. writing, or preservation of Johnson County history.”

Johnson County Historical Society will be holding a reception in honor of this year’s Irving Weber Award recipient, Hills Bank and Trust Company, for their continued contributions and support of Johnson County history. Light refreshments will be served. Short annual meeting to follow award ceremony.

JCHS will also be unveiling a new exhibition during this event. The photography exhibition “Street View: Downtown Iowa City, Then and Now” highlights images of the downtown area’s buildings and businesses from 1960 and 2016. JCHS will display these street scenes along with period artifacts. The side-by- side views will encourage visitors to compare the buildings and businesses of downtown Iowa City “then and “now.” The exhibition opening will begin at 3 pm, following the annual meeting.

Pumpkin Party

Johnson County Historical Society is partnering with Take A Kid Outdoors – Iowa for their Annual Pumpkin Carving event! JCHS will have the historic asylum building open to the public.

Come join in on all the fun fall activities! October 22nd from 11:00 am- 1:00 pm at the Johnson County Poor Farm & Asylum.

 

2016 Annual Cemetery Walk

Join us at the St. Mary’s Newport Church for one of our most popular events, our annual cemetery walk! This year, take a guided walk among the tombstones and meet some of St. Mary’s finest residents! After your adventure, enjoy some light refreshments.

St. Mary’s Newport Church is currently in the process of raising funds to renovate the roof and siding. The church will be hosting a bake sale during our cemetery walk. All proceeds will go towards the renovations. Please help save this beautiful Johnson County treasure!

Irving Weber Award Reception and JCHS Annual Meeting

The Irving Weber Award is conferred by the Johnson County Historical Society in recognition of distinguished contribution to the research, writing, or preservation of Johnson County History.

JCHS will be holding a reception in honor of this year’s recipients, Dr. William and Bertha Olin, for their continued contributions and support of Johnson County History. The event is sponsored by MidwestOne Bank. Light refreshments and hors d’oeuvres will be served. Please join us in celebrating Johnson County history!

Cost is $10 for members and $15 for non-members.

There will be a short business meeting following the reception ceremony.

Beyond the Grave: Cemetery Tour

Come experience history in a new way at the most mysterious time of the year. Meet some of Johnson County’s earliest residents at their final resting place.

Emerging from the night in period costume, actors will tell the tales of those buried at Lone Tree Cemetery.

Meet at the Lone Tree American Legion Post 457 for a soup supper at 5:00pm followed by tours beginning at 6:00pm.
