Early Americana: Planting and Harvesting Corn by Hand (1850s-1930s) This exhibit captures the time and tools between manually placing seeds into the ground and the high-tech mechanization of planting today. The early tools include grain seeders and hand corn planters with multiple mechanisms for release of the seeds. There is an extensive collection of husking pegs and husking hooks used when farmers hand-picked corn. The collection will be on display through February 2020. This annual event will feature delicious food and lively music. This year celebrates anniversaries of Iowa City staples: the Preucil School of Music and the University of Iowa's Division of Performing Arts. Atlases, Maps, and More: The Melchoir Huebinger Lecture

This lecture, presented by Mike Flaherty, will provide a wealth of information about Melchoir Huebinger and his creation of the first Iowa road atlas. Melchoir Huebinger worked as a cartographer in the later part of the 1800s and the early 1900s. His work helped convince the nation that Iowa had "stepped out of the mud" and had new, modern paved roads.
